The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) revealed that it has a brigade permanently in control of online sales, showing that it is attentive to the «world of the net». This year alone this unit made more than 100 arrests.
The statements are from António Nunes, inspector general, quoted by Lusa, who spoke about the fifth anniversary of ASAE, marked this Friday, and who guaranteed that the «world of the WWW» is one of the new challenges of this Ministry body Economy, Innovation and Development.
The official admits that it is difficult to find inspectors who dominate the Internet universe, «because it is a very specific medium». «We need to have more inspectors who master the computer tools, with a greater depth than we have», but even so «we are controlling sales from a distance», he assures.
António Nunes says that this control bears fruit regularly, such as the 120 arrests of people who tried to sell tickets online.
The commercialization of products – from «homemade» honey, to grandma’s candy, through necklaces and other artisanal manifestations – without proper registration is «an irregularity» that ASAE guarantees to be also following.
Since it was created, and until November 30 this year, ASAE has carried out almost 30 thousand operations, made 4,065 arrests, inspected close to 200 thousand operators (there are 700 thousand in Portugal), recorded 79,641 violations and seized material worth 113 million euros, namely more than 400 thousand pirated CDs and DVDs.
