For some time, users of Apple Watches they have a feature that I particularly love – especially if you don’t have a MacBook Air / Pro with Touch ID: the ability to unlock your Mac using your watch. Just open the cover of the Mac, touch the trackpad or mouse, which, when the watch is properly unlocked, the computer recognizes that you are you and releases the use without the need to enter your password.
Still, this communication between Apple Watch and Mac comes down to the initial unlock. Whoever has a Mac with Touch ID can do more things, such as automatically filling in usernames and passwords on forms.
In macOS 10.15, however, Apple is expected to expand the use of the Apple Watch as an authenticator. Second Guilherme Rambo, of 9to5Mac – which again cites sources familiar with the development of macOS -, the next version of Apple’s desktop operating system will allow users to authenticate other operations on the Mac in addition to just unlocking the machine with the clock.
Rambo said it is not clear what type of authentications will be supported, but it is possible that all operations which can currently be authenticated with Touch ID can also be approved by the Apple Watch. For this, it is likely that there is a user interface on watchOS to authorize the process, similar to the current confirmation of Apple Pay (the user needs to press the side button twice to allow the purchase; something much simpler than entering a password), since doing everything without the user’s knowledge doesn’t seem that safe.
Or, who knows, Apple explains how everything works with a good tutorial on macOS 10.15 and, when authenticating one of these operations, the watch sends only a warning (a new sound or a new shaking pattern) in order to leave the user aware that Watch was used as a password (and no interaction is really necessary, exactly how unlocking the Mac works today).
