Apple was already working on a tablet project in the early 1990s

1990 Apple TabletCompanies like Apple (but not just her, let it be clear) have in their history cases of product launches that hit the market too early, that is, ahead of their time. They are technologies that end up not being well understood by the public, or ideas that make the product's success impossible due to its high price.

THE TechCrunch today released an “exclusive” image from 1990 that shows Samir Arora, current CEO of Glam, holding a touch-sensitive Mac project, the Pen Mac yes, it would work with a stylus. At the time, Samir was at Apple involved with the project, which ran in the company in parallel to Newton.

The Pen Mac was a fully functional Mac slightly smaller than the Mac Portable (both used the same screen) and not much thicker than an inch. It has a built-in speaker (played even the traditional Mac sound when turned on) and supported connectivity with external keyboard and mouse.

Later, under the command of CEO John Sculley, Apple ended up abandoning the project in favor of Newton, as it did not believe there was room for two products in the same segment (competitors) in its line. On Flickr there is a set of photos of an alleged PenLite, which would be a second generation of the Pen Mac project this one also abandoned by Apple.

Will the story repeat itself?
