Apple surpassed Samsung in smartphone sales at the end of 2019

The numbers don’t lie: this week, we saw the Apple achieve the highest collection for a quarter of December, as a consequence of the significant increase in iPhones sales. This, of course, would imply in the overall ranking of smartphone sales (we just didn’t know how much).

According to new research published by Strategy Analytics, Apple surpassed Samsung to become the largest smartphone seller during the fourth and final quarter of 2019 in the world, snapping up 18.9% of all sales this period!

As Apple no longer discloses the number of devices sold, SA had to do this on its own: according to the firm, the company sold 70.7 million iPhones in the last three months of the year, enough to put it ahead of Samsung, with 68.8 million of devices sold.

Smartphone sales in Q4 / 2019

Precisely due to the fact that Apple does not disclose the exact number of devices sold, there may be some inconsistency: IHS Markit, for example, inverted the position defined by SA in its table, placing Samsung with 70.7 million sales and Apple with 67.7 million. According to the Bloomberghowever, there were practically no exorbitant differences between the two manufacturers that lead the ranking.

PiPhone‌ sales increased 7% per year, from 65.9 million units worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2018 to 70.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2019. This was Apple’s best growth performance since 2015. The Apple’s global smartphone market increased from 18% to 19% last year. It is recovering due to cheaper iPhone 11 prices and demand in Asia and North America.

Although the last quarter was from Apple, the overall figures point to a “victory” for Samsung: SA estimates that, during the 12 months, Samsung sold 295 million devices, while Apple sold 193 million iPhones.
