Cumulative sales of Apple products in their first two years of availability

Apple sold more AirPods than iPhones in its first two years of life

Amid the not-so-good tide (in terms of creativity and innovation, at least) that has settled on Apple in recent years, AirPods stand out as one of the proofs that the old flame is still burning in Cupertino: although they have their share of critics, the wireless headphones represent almost quintessentially the Apple’s search for simplicity and ease of use. And consumers provide the answer.

Cumulative sales of Apple products in their first two years of availability

In a very interesting survey for the Above Avalon, analyst Neil Cybart came to the conclusion that AirPods took second place in the ranking of Apple products that sold more units in the first two years of the line’s existence – that is, considering the entire universe of products within the line as “line”. of the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, iPod and other categories.

As shown in the graph above, 9 quarters after launch, AirPods have had about 25 million units sold. Surprisingly, the ranking champion is not the iPhone, but the iPad, which sold an impressive 80 million units in its first 2 years; the Apple smartphone, in turn, had around 22 million units shipped in the same period.

More than just commercial success, AirPods are also a hit from Internet. Cybart cited how the interest in headphones has only grown – which is rare, considering that we are talking about an accessory and a product that completed two years of life without any updates and without discounts on its price. To give you an idea, comparing Google searches in December 2017 and December 2018, Internet users’ interest in AirPods grew 500%, according to data collected by the analyst.

This is happening because, in a way, AirPods have already become memes in various corners of the internet. The very image of the two white tubes coming out of people’s ears is taking on a character as iconic as the silhouettes of the iPod campaigns, with their white wired headphones. In other words, Apple has achieved, with AirPods, something it has not achieved since the advent of the iPhone: turning one of its products into an element of pop culture.

With the rumors of an update of the headphones coming soon, the question remains: will the Apple be able to keep the shuttlecock in the air and the AirPods will remain with the status they have today? Let’s wait and see.
