Two years ago, we commented that the Apple was planning to occupy part of Battersea Thermoelectric Plant, in London, to serve as the company's first campus in England.
Scheduled to be completed in 2021, the project depends on the restoration of the site, which has been abandoned for more than 30 years. However, to the unhappiness of Ma and other companies, the works have been delayed for months and several buyers have already given up on the project, as published by The Times.
According to the newspaper, the news of a possible delay in the final delivery of the building prompted Apple to start looking for other locations to build its future London branch fortress. Despite this, no possible locations were disclosed where the Cupertino giant could set up its next campus.
According to the engineer responsible for the reconstruction of Battersea, Simon Murphy, the project will be ready in time for the scheduled date, and Ma should be installed soon after the delivery of the building.
We will give (Apple) that building at the end of 2021. Everyone is very confident at this stage. You will probably see Apple arriving sometime later. Its suitability (installation of services, furniture and IT) is a great job.
As we said, the Battersea Thermoelectric Plant has not been used for more than 30 years, the site was closed in 1983 and, in 2012, it was purchased by a consortium of companies from Malaysia. Located on the famous River Tmisa, the site of more than 170 thousand square meters can accommodate twice the number of employees that Apple has in London, that is, 3,000 people.
In addition to offices, the site will serve as a two-storey shopping center; around the main building, around 253 apartments with hanging gardens will be built around a huge square, which will serve as a leisure area. Within the complex, an auditorium with a capacity for more than 2,000 people and some cinemas will also be built.
