Rumors about Apple’s new releases have continued to be quite confusing in recent days.
Just yesterday, we commented that new AirPods would be ready to be released by Apple at any time. What model would that be? Difficult to say, since the line currently consists of two AirPods (one “common” and the other Pro); allied to that, there are rumors that the company could launch two other models, one over-ear and another focused on sports.
The fact is that leaker Jon Prosser, who has been leaking recent Apple launches with great success, is confident that we will see new AirPods soon – without specifying whether it would be one of these new or updates to existing ones.
Today the Nikkei Asian Review reported that Apple’s original plan was to update the AirPods (probably the second generation, but that was not clear in the story) this year, but that this was postponed due to the global crisis imposed by the new Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The news corroborates another published by Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst who also has a great track record of hits involving Apple launches. According to him, new AirPods [Pro] – updates to current models – would be released only in 2021 or even 2022.
It is worth remembering that the second generation AirPods were launched in March 2019, while the Pro model arrived in October 2019.
Production in Vietnam
The Asian newspaper report also reported that Apple took about 30% of AirPods production to the Vietnam this quarter, further expanding its production plan outside China – in order to further decentralize its chain. Vietnamese production involves only the “common” model, not the Pro.
Also according to the vehicle, Apple is preparing for a drop in demand for AirPods in the current quarter also due, obviously, to the pandemic.

Contrary to the report of the Nikkei, it’s not just the AirPods that are being produced in Vietnam.
The image makes it clear that the Pro model is also being assembled in the country, which probably became a good outlet (in terms of production) for Apple.
