Apple Photos will become smarter on iOS 12, update for iPhone and iPad scheduled for September. Apple announced new features for the app during WWDC 2018 this Monday (4), including automated features such as sending images to friends using facial recognition, and the Para Voc tab, where the main news will be concentrated.

The changes make the service more like rival Google Photos, which uses artificial intelligence to organize albums and even edit and apply effects to images. Here's what to expect from Apple's photo and video management app.

The main change in Fotos is the Para Você tab, which contains albums with memories and suggestions for sharing images and videos with identified friends. The feature looks like the Google Photos Assistant menu, a special section that shows automatic edits to improve brightness or create similar photo montages. In the case of Apple Photos, however, there is no offer of automatically enhanced images.

Sharing tips

Apple Photos on iOS 12 now recognizes people in photos in the gallery for easy sharing. When capturing photos and videos at an event, the app will identify the faces in the images and group the content to automatically send between those involved. Apple also promises to identify repeated images to avoid unwanted copies during the process. The function is in the For You tab.

When using the Photos search tool, the app will try to predict which images or videos are being searched for by the user, to offer results more quickly. The search field can also suggest keywords to better filter images and speed up the task. The screen will show content grouped into categories according to the search, allowing you to open collections of media related to a place or an event.

Although the Apple Photos is still behind in functions, it outpaces the rival when it comes to privacy. The Apple app uses the machine learning feature built into the device itself to identify faces, locations and objects in photos and videos. The measure prevents the content from being accessed by algorithms in the cloud, as with the Google app. In addition, automatic sharing between users uses the iMessage encryption protocol, protecting the content from possible interceptions.
