Apple opens the door to the iPhone Day

The day has come that millions of users around the world have been waiting for. The one who has already dubbed «the iPhone day» will have its high point at six o’clock in the afternoon – American time – when all Apple stores and about 2,000 AT&T open doors and start selling the phone.

Considered by many to be «a cult object», the iPhone will be received first-hand by the hundreds of users who camped at the point of sale for several days in the hope of taking the equipment home today. Not even the prices charged by Apple scare the most enthusiastic people who have already queued up to buy the phone since Monday morning.

This behavior led Steve Jobs’ company to establish a set of rules that must be complied with in the 164 stores of the brand opened for launch. Among the rules, it is highlighted the impossibility for a customer to purchase more than two mobile phones or to be served if he is out of the service line in order of arrival.

As in situations involving the launch of a prominent product, several consultants analyzed the public’s behavior in the face of the arrival of the iPhone. ComScore reports that Americans flooded search engines with more than 6.9 million queries about the Apple phone and about 274,000 iPhone-related issues a week since Steve Jobs announced its launch at the Macworld Expo.

The search for information about the product may be an indication of the success to be achieved in the market. Even so, IDC questions the extent to which all this media coverage will be synonymous with a volume of sales capable of supporting all the environments associated with the iPhone.

One of the negative factors pointed out by the consultant is the selling price of the equipment to the public. Despite all the capabilities of the product, the 499 dollars and 599 dollars required for the 4GB and 8 GB versions, respectively, are, in the consultant’s opinion, high, which may mean that, after the initial period, the sales volume equipment will stagnate.

It should be noted that in addition to the price of the equipment, the value of the subscription contracts with AT&T increases, which, according to Apple, could bring the price of the iPhone to $ 3,000, a value that combines maximum costs with the loyalty contracts. . The operator announced this week that the contracts provide for the offer of different types of communications plans, whose monthly fees vary between 60 and 100 euros.

It remains to be remembered that the iPhone, in addition to combining the functions of an iPod with those of a mobile phone, allows users to access the Internet, watch TV, take pictures, access YouTube content or Google Maps, among other tasks, everything from its three-inch touchscreen.

The mobile phone is expected to reach the European market later this year. It is not yet defined which operator is responsible for launching the equipment on our continent although, for the time being, talks are taking place with Vodafone.
