Apple is in the process of acquiring Drive.ai, a startup focused on autonomous cars

Confirmed: Apple bought startup Drive.ai

Putting more fuel into the tireless rumors of an “Apple Car” (known internally as “Project Titan”), the The Information this week announced the possibility that Apple could buy the startup Drive.ai – focused, check it out, on autonomous cars.

Drive.ai was conceived in 2015 within the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Stanford University, the result of the work of a group of undergraduate students and PhD students. It already operates services with self-guided vehicles in Arlington, Texas.

THE The Information says Drive.ai started a search for potential buyers in February, but that negotiations with Apple would be “Acqui-hire” – that is, a mass hiring of engineers instead of the actual purchase of the company. Two years ago, Drive.ai was valued at $ 200 million.

Contacted, Apple simply replied that it does not comment on rumors or speculation. In other words, none of that traditional statement of when it only confirms the acquisition of companies.

A few weeks ago, information emerged that Apple tried to buy Tesla in 2013. Last February, on the other hand, the company confirmed 190 layoffs for its self-driving car project. Nobody knows exactly where the thing is.
