Apple is doing well in Consumer Reports notebook reliability research; magazine fails to recommend Surface line

Apple has a complicated relationship with Consumer Reports. The publication, one of the most respected in the United States when it comes to the evaluation and recommendation of products of the most varied categories (since no less than 1936, it should be noted), has the custom of giving good grades to Ma products; Late last year, however, the magazine temporarily withdrew its coveted seal of recommendation from the new MacBook Pro due to an inconsistency in its battery. Apple corrected the software bug and the machines soon regained the certificate, but the relationship between the two companies may have shuddered.

If so, today's news could be a bright horizon in their friendship: in a new survey of more than 90,000 owners of notebooks and tablets from various brands, CR has named Apple as the manufacturer whose products have the least amount of breakage after two years of use.

As noted, about 10% of Apple's portable computers were defective at the end of their second year of use, according to survey data; The index was the lowest among all manufacturers surveyed with good clearance, the second best placed, the Samsung, achieved a rate of 16%, while equally well-known brands such as Dell, Toshiba and Microsoft, embittered the worst average of the survey (22%, 24% and 25%, respectively).

With respect to Redmond's giant, specifically, a similar policy to Apple's last year is starting. THE CR decided withdraw of the (complimentedly) Surface line devices is their seal of recommendation, claiming to think that the devices are “significantly less reliable than those of other brands”. Failures such as freezes, unexpected shutdowns, and problems with the touchscreen were some of those reported by users surveyed, which made the institution decide not to recommend the line anymore.

In a statement Reuters, Microsoft has stated that its own customer satisfaction data are very different from those obtained by CR: “We do not believe these results accurately reflect the experience of Surfaces owners or capture the improved performance and reliability we include in each new generation of the line.”

It is good to note that newer Surface products, such as the Surface Laptop and the new Surface Pro, do not enter the survey simply because they have not yet completed two years of market results, thus reflecting the performance of some older devices such as the Surface Book and earlier models of the flagship tablet of the line. We will see if this graph will change in the near future, therefore.
