Apple extends leadership in the wireless headset market

At this point it is no longer a novelty, nor a surprise, that AirPods they are unbridled sales success. In the past few months, we’ve followed the growth in popularity of Apple’s wireless headsets towards the top of sales statistics, and now we see them reaching their peak – so far.

A new report published by Strategy Analytics points out that Apple sold almost 60 million units of AirPods (first, second generations and Pros) in 2019 – which corresponds, moreover, to the forecast made a few days ago by investor Kevin Rooke.

As a category, sales of headphones called “fully wireless” grew 200% last year; from 2001 to 2024, SA predicts that Apple will dominate the segment “which it created with the first AirPods”.

Apple’s AirPods dominate the Bluetooth headset market in terms of sales volumes and revenues in the wireless segment. Even if other suppliers enter this segment, Apple will remain the dominant supplier in the category until the middle of this decade.

According to the firm’s associate director, Ville-Petteri Ukonaho, Apple has held more than 50% share in the wireless headphones category in 2019, while its two closest competitors (Samsung and Xiaomi) have accumulated less than 10%.

The “AirPod effect”, however, opened doors for the wireless headset market to grow overall. Still according to SA, this niche “is wide open”, and in the last six months the prices of some models have halved, allowing consumers to choose cheaper options than those of Apple, Bose and Samsung.

Apple’s leadership is not surprising since it created the category, but it is unlikely that a single supplier can replace it at the top in terms of volume or revenue on Bluetooth headsets in the near future.

Such popularity contributed to the revenue of wireless headsets manufacturers to grow dramatically in the past year, which will further help the expansion of this market in the coming years: SA estimates that revenues will exceed $ 100 billion until 2024.

Whether or not Apple has created the niche market for wireless headsets, the fact is that it is dominating it. We will then see what the company has in store for AirPods in the future – and whether that will be enough to keep the hype of yours gadgets.
