Apple had already advanced, in the last week, all the actions that would take to celebrate the International Women's Day tomorrow, March 8th. But Ma decided to go further: Today, a very interesting video was published on her YouTube channel celebrating the achievements of feminism around the world and highlighting several points that I still need to fight for.
Narrated by the singer-songwriter Annie Lennox and with the participation of figures like Dua Lipa, Mary J. Blige, Ed Sheeran, Eddie Izzard and many others, the video, entitled Global Feminism (“Global Feminism”), celebrates the advancements of women's rights over the past decades. He notes that while more women today live with their civil rights duly respected than in all of human history, many statistics are not yet on their side.
Celebrities hold posters exposing some of these worrying numbers, such as:
- One in three women or girls have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lives.
- More than 2.7 billion women are legally prohibited from having the same choice of jobs as men.
- Women make up only 22.8% of seats in the world's parliaments and congresses.
- 99% of all maternal deaths occur in developing countries.
- 2/3 of the 757 million adults who cannot read or write in the world are women.
- 603 million women live in countries where domestic violence is not considered a crime.
In other words, as much as the advances have been strong and abundant over the last century, there is still much to fight for, whether you are a woman or just having a little empathy.
