Apple begins investigation into problems related to SuperDrives

Virgin disc, CD, DVD, mediaWith the number of complaints related to SuperDrives increasing since the beginning of this month, a developer told the AppleInsider that Apple appears to have started a deeper investigation into the issue. He was reportedly contacted by an Apple Developer Relations representative specifically to address the issue.

A specific topic on Apple's support forums now has 18 discussion pages, adding up to more than 250 different reports of users having difficulty using their optical drives. Apparently the problem is not so new, but it ended up being discovered now that everyone needed to use the component to install Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

At least two different models of SuperDrives found on a variety of Macs have problems with reading and / or identifying media: “MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E” and “HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N”, despite some users have cited other models.
