Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the ranking of companies that spend the most on semiconductors

There’s no one for anyone! Apple and Samsung continued to dominate the semiconductor market in 2017. Together, the two represented 19.5% of the world market, investing $ 81.8 billion – an increase of more than $ 20 billion compared to 2016.

Both dominate the ranking since 2011, with Samsung always ahead of Apple. This year, however, they moved further away from third place (Dell), as we can see in the ranking below disclosed by Gartner:

Also according to Gartner, 8 of the 10 largest companies in 2016 remained in the Top 10 in 2017 – the top 5 positions remained unchanged. LG returned to Top 10, accompanied by newcomer Western Digital, which increased its semiconductor spending by $ 1.7 billion in 2017. BBK moved up one place to sixth, increasing its investments in the area by $ 5.7 billion.

Total semiconductor spending for the 10 largest OEMs increased significantly, with the total reaching 40% of the semiconductor market. Gartner also predicts that by 2021, the top 10 OEMs will account for more than 45% of total semiconductor spending in the world.
