Although Apple consumers downloaded more than 1.5 billion apps on the AppStore during the past year, the service does not represent the future of the mobility industry, a Google executive told Financial Times.
For Vic Gundotra, Vice President of Engineering at Google, mobile device users will be able to get information and entertainment directly from browsers in the future. He also said that not even Google is prepared to provide support for all different mobile platforms such as Apple’s AppStore, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Android and variations of Nokia’s platform.
“What we’re clearly seeing happen is a shift to incredibly powerful browsers. Many applications can be delivered through the browser and what it does for our costs is impressive. We believe that the web will gain over the next few years, the browser, for economic reasons, will practically become the platform that matters and undoubtedly where Google is investing ”.
