One more year is gone and once again we have statistics on the two main app stores in the world. The good part is that, even with the crisis in the smartphone sector, stores are still sailing in the wind especially App store, as Sensor Tower reported in its most recent reports.
Throughout 2018, smartphone users around the world downloaded no less than 100 billion from the App Store and Google Play, with the Mountain View store capturing over 3/4 of that total, 75.7 billion downloads were recorded for Android apps. Not surprisingly, considering that the robot system has a slice much largest mobile device market in the world.
Still, as usual, the App Store far outperformed its competitor when the money was metric. Ma's store generated revenue of $ 46.6 billion, nearly double the $ 24.8 billion generated by Google Play. This grew more, however, with 27.3% higher revenue compared to 2017 the App Store grew 20.4%.
Much of that profit comes from games: In the App Store, $ 33.2 billion of the total revenue came from games on Google Play, $ 21.5 billion.
Sensor Tower also registered the most downloaded apps in the world, once again consolidating the popularity of WhatsApp as Facebook's flagship product. Interestingly, on iOS it ranked third, losing to the TikTok it's the YouTube. In games, Helix jump and PUBG Mobile shared the leadership, with other old acquaintances painting in the ranking.
In terms of revenue, although the Tinder has taken the crown on Google Play the Netflix was the general champion which certainly will not be repeated in 2019.
Sensor Tower warns that, depending on the numbers of the smartphone market as of early 2019, app store results could also be slightly shaken. Nevertheless, the developer community has already created a level of solidity that makes any kind of crisis in such a thriving market very difficult, or at least we hope so.
