Last Monday (15), Instagram launched stickers and an augmented reality filter for Stories in celebration of the LGBTIQ + Pride month, celebrated throughout the month of June. The social network also brought back the special hashtags displayed in the rainbow-colored feed, originally launched in 2019 to celebrate the movement. Likewise, the «ball» in Stories also appears colorful for users who use the tags in their publications. All updates are now available globally on Android phones and iPhones (iOS).

The five new stickers were developed by Instagram creators, including the Brazilian Niege Borges, responsible for two stickers. The stickers depict hearts illustrated in the colors of the movement’s flags, a dog holding a rainbow flag, a disabled person in a rainbow wheelchair, as well as people with elements from the LGBTIQ + universe.

In addition to the stickers, Stories also got an augmented reality filter that adds colorful neon frames to the screen. Altogether, there are 12 different color combinations, one for each gender and sexuality identity banner: LGBTQ +, gay, transgender, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, pansexual, non-binary, intersex, agender, fluid gender and genderqueer.

Instagram also brought back the rainbow-colored hashtags to the feed. When using one of the more than 100 tags of the movement in the legend of the publications, they are automatically displayed with a colored gradient. When used in Stories, the user’s avatar loses the traditional pink outline and starts to display a circle in the colors of the rainbow. Among the hashtags in Portuguese used to participate in the movement are #Orgulho and #ShareComOrgulho.

In a note, Instagram says that the updates seek to highlight the expression, power and voice of the entire LGBTIQ + community, especially during the period of social isolation. «Diversity is what connects and moves the community on Instagram. Allowing people to connect, express themselves and share special moments is at the heart of everything Instagram does.»
