The period from 2002 to 2005 was dominated by Friendster, a Canadian pioneer social network that exploded abroad but was not successful in Brazil. In 2009, with still remaining popularity in Asia, the service was negotiated with Malsia-based company MOL Global Pte. The site was discontinued in 2015 after failing to attract gamers attention.
Long before that, in 2005, MySpace took the lead and became 2007 as the most used social network in the world. YouTube era and rise of Facebook
Google's purchase of YouTube, sealed at the end of 2006, marked the beginning of rapid growth in the social video network. The service quickly surpassed MySpace's 61 million monthly users and ended 2007 with about 140 million active profiles. The leadership lasted until 2011, when Facebook, founded in 2004, reached 490 million users and left Google's video site behind.
At that time, Google also owned the third most used social network: Google Buzz, which accumulated about 170 million users until it was discontinued in 2011 and closed completely in 2013.
