Since the first release for developers was released, several features have been discovered by users and programmers who already use and test Android 11.
The first preview of Android 11 aimed at developers has been used and, with each passing day, we have seen new features being discovered.
Google has published a full timeline of versions that will be released during the year until we reach the final version for users. In the image it is possible to see that we will have three versions for the developers, three BETAS in short sequence, until the final version that arrives sometime in the third quarter.
Complete timeline for the arrival of Android 11All-new Android 11 features
- Possibility to store in addition to credit card data, now support for "secure storage and retrieval of verifiable identification documents", includes driver's licenses and soon passports.
- Third-party applications may also add items such as loyalty program cards and tickets.
- Control for personalizing IoT devices: nothing aimed at the user has changed, but a number of hidden settings indicate that we can include smart home device controls directly in the power menu.
- New developer option allows overlay that shows refresh rate, like Fraps: on Android 11, you can trigger an overlay that shows your current refresh rate – useful for checking debugging issues with the new high refresh rate displays. In addition to being able to test screen refresh rates during games without the need for an extra app.
- Native screen recording: the built-in screen recording was revealed (later disabled) on Android 10 and is now back on the release of Android 11.
- Airplane mode with context recognition: if you are playing music on Bluetooth headphones and switch to airplane mode, then Bluetooth will not be turned off and your headphones will continue to listen to music.
- Pause gesture for Pixel 4's Motion Sense: a new "dive" gesture that lets you play / pause media has been added on Android 11 for Pixel 4, although the application that delivers the update may end up being distributed outside of Android views 11. Motion Sense gestures as a whole also look much better on Android 10.
- Bubble notifications are back: they also appeared for the first time on Android 10, now "bubble" notifications are back on Android 11, offering superimposed warnings on the screen. They shouldn't have existed for me.
- The "battery sharing" suggests the presence of reverse charging for the Pixel 5: a hidden detail in the first developer version of Android 11 shows this feature, probably similar to Samsung's Wireless Powershare.
- Display of Bluetooth codec support for headphones: Android 11 will show which audio codecs the headphones support (via a developer option codec selection menu).
- Notification history: Google is working on a new way to view old notifications, as part of a general overhaul of the notification display on Android 11.
- Rear double-touch gesture for Pixel smartphones: Android 11 has a hidden feature that creates a new double-touch gesture, customizable for various features, giving Pixels (and perhaps other Android smartphones) a new gesture / trigger for actions.
Visual adjustments
- "Conversations" section for messaging app notifications now takes precedence over other types of notifications. They also receive a different long-press menu compared to other types of notifications, including the option to move a particular notification to a balloon.
- Do not disturb menu has been reorganized: This time, a reorganization around three types of notifications: People, Applications and Alarms and other sources.

Privacy and security changes
- Temporary / unique app permissions: Android 11 adds the option to grant some permissions "Only this time", so you can continue to decide on a case-by-case basis.
- Repeatedly denying permission requests will block them: if an application requests a permission twice and is denied by the user both times, the application will be prevented from requesting permission again.
- Extra touch to grant overlay permissions: overlay-based attacks are a serious concern for the Android platform. Starting with Android 11, applications that need your permission cannot simply take you toggle, you must navigate to the option and activate it. it's just an extra touch, but it can make a difference for those who blindly grant malware permissions.
- There is no more access to the location in the background: although applications may request an exemption, Google is urging developers to stop allowing applications to request continuous access to the location, so that they cannot gather this information in the background, only while they are running. All new applications must meet this requirement by August, and in November, anyone who does not meet this requirement will be removed from the Play Store.
Modifications to existing resources
- The dark mode captures the triggers of sunset and custom weather: when Google finally gave Android a dark theme last year, a much-needed option for an automatic trigger was missing.
- Applications that use the camera can silence notifications: To prevent a harmful notification sound or vibration from spoiling a planned photo or clip, applications that use the camera can prevent the smartphone from sending notification.
- Update of the main line of the project: the system that Google introduced last year with Android 10, which allowed the update of the system components through the Play Store, is expanding to support updating more different system modules, increasing the count to 20.
- Pin apps on the sharing list / menu is back: Introduced with Nougat and deleted on Android 10, now that the share list has been redesigned, you can pin apps for frequent use again.
- Extended screenshots: Although Google labeled the idea as "unviable", the company later agreed to add the feature and the first hidden signs of it appeared on Android 11 – although it still doesn't work.
- Option to increase the touch sensitivity on the Pixel 4: this may end up being exclusive to the Pixel 4 (so far) and may not work at the moment, but Android 11 brought us an alternative to increase the touch screen sensitivity for use with items as screen savers.
- Google may be experimenting with moving media controls to the Quick Settings menu. Although no one liked that idea.
- Sensitivity setting of the double touch gesture at the rear: You want to configure the sensitivity so that the double touch action is activated by mistake.
- Car accident detection arrives on the older Google Pixels via the Android 11 application: thanks to the version of the personal security application included with Android 11, you can load the car accident detection functionality on the older Pixels.
- Opening links in another application performed just a touch now.
- New shortcut to expand the volume key.
- Notice about problems with custom DNS server: instead of simply providing a "no Internet" notification, Android 11 lets you know if the custom DNS server could be to blame for connectivity problems.
- Pixel Launcher now makes it possible to carry out various customizations, replace the application suggestion line in the overview / multitasking menu, hide application specific suggestions, among other things.
Internal changes (API)
- Developers will have a little more time to fix things for Android 11: Google is giving us an extra "platform stability milestone" with the final changes to the SDK / NDK APIs, so developers who are running to create Android 11 tm until June before things are finished. Apps on the Play Store also don't need to be updated to support changes until the end of 2021.
- Better support for curved edge screens "waterfall": a new API that augments the existing screen clipping API to help developers create apps for smartphones with curved screens, allowing them to exclude certain elements from hitting the curved sides of the screen avoiding touch accidental.
- Stricter and undocumented APIs at startup: Developers who use non-public APIs for specific purposes need to ensure that their applications continue to work with new restrictions on Android 11.
- The ADB "Overscan" command does not work on Android 11: we are not sure whether it is an intentional change or not (Google has not yet responded), but Android 11 eliminated the ADB overscan command, used by many third-party applications that modify the navigation bar.
- Built-in application compatibility tester: Android 11 has tools to help developers better test changes to the platform, enabling and disabling them individually to see how they can interact with applications.
