4K resolution
The second-generation Apple TV only supported 720p video output. In the third we move to 1080p, which remained in the fourth.
Now on Apple TV 4K, we have nothing less than 4x the number of pixels over the previous one (more pixel density, sharper picture). But obviously to enjoy this you need to connect to set top box to a television that is 4K.

Apple TV 4K supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10.
Performance
Here's a big leap: on fourth-generation Apple TV we had an A8 chip; on Apple 4K TV, we move to an A10X Fusion (same as current iPad Pro).

Capabilities and prices
Until yesterday's event, fourth-generation Apple TV was sold in the United States in 32GB and 64GB versions for $ 150 and $ 200, respectively (or for $ 1,100 and $ 1,400 in Brazil).
With the launch of Apple TV 4K, Apple will continue to sell only the 32GB model of the fourth generation and, interestingly, did not move her price. The new ones will come for $ 180 and $ 200 ($ 1,300 and $ 1,400), in the same capacities.

Is it worth it?
The most obvious / fair answer “depends”, of course.
If you already have or intend to buy soon a 4K / HDR TV (whose prices are falling, but still prohibitive for many people), I think I don't even have to answer that.
If not, I think the gains over the fourth generation model may not be so worth it. You will basically have a smoother / faster Apple TV for everything and obviously already ready for when in the future you will get a new television.
But if you still have a third-generation (or earlier) Apple TV, this is a very good time to buy this new one.
