Analyst estimates Apple could lose $ 10 billion in sales of iPhones after the battery controversy

Apple’s deliberate decision to slow down the processing of iPhones 6 or higher with batteries that have already deteriorated has caused a worldwide uproar that has lasted for several weeks.

After the controversy arose, the Apple has already positioned itself, explained exactly why it chose this path and – as more than obligation due to the inconvenience caused – it even decreased the price of changing the battery of the devices: in the United States, the exchange was from $ 79 to $ 29; here in Brazil, the price fell from R $ 449 to R $ 149.

The news, which is great for any user who wants to change the battery of their device, could affect Apple more than we could imagine.

IPhone 6s battery

The possibility of a “new life” given to older devices – from a simple (and now affordable) battery change – could cause many users who might be buying new iPhones to stay with previous models for a while longer . This fact, as published in the Bloomberg, may cause Apple to stop selling about 16 million iPhones this year.

This bet, which would represent a 4% reduction in its total revenue, was made by analyst Mark Moskowitz, from Barclays. The estimate is that Apple will change the battery in about 10% of the 519 million iPhones that are eligible for the exchange – although anyone can now enjoy the lower price, and we even heard that the exchange will also be made within warranty (when applicable).

Charging $ 29 for the exchange, Apple will still get according to the analyst roughly $ 1.5 billion in revenue, but the value is well below the approximate $ 10 billion that it may lose in sales of new devices (that is, 16 million iPhones times an average of $ 625 per device). And that doesn’t even take into account what the company may also lose in the various lawsuits filed against it in the world.

Everything, of course, is just guesswork. It is not known exactly how many people will actually prefer to replace the battery of their iPhones until December 2018 – the term of the discount offered by Apple – not least because the new models continue to offer the differentials ever, including more powerful processor, updated design, screens more advanced, improved cameras, greater storage capacity, new biometric system and so on.
