An iPod touch with the rear camera of the iPhone 4 will have to be thicker or defy physics

Apparently, the joy of a rumor saying that the next iPod touch will have almost all the features of the iPhone 4 was short-lived: iFixit, at the request of the MacRumors, compared the dimensions of the media player of Apple with those of the rear camera of the new smartphone.

See the image below and tell me if it is possible to fit the component in the current touch case:

Yes, the iPod measures 6mm at the edges, while the five megapixel camera measures 6.5mm. If the rumor is true, the new version of the touch should be thicker. I, in particular, highly doubt this for two reasons: 1. although iPod touch follows the iPhone in its tendencies, Apple always keeps it two steps behind so as not to cannibalize the smartphone and / or not to extrapolate the price; 2. It is quite possible for the iPod to be “flattened” like the iPhone, but I find it highly unlikely that it will get thicker.

Another component, however, more in keeping with the reality of the iPod touch: the front camera of the iPhone 4 measures just 2.5mm thick. Adding this to the supposed parts of new touches that were leaked, we have a more plausible scenario: the new iPods would be part of the set of “FaceTime devices” that Jobs quickly mentioned in the opening keynote for WWDC 2010.

Let's take the opportunity to recap the cat bag in terms of cameras on Ma's gadgets: iPod nano 5G films with cool effects, but it doesn't shoot; the iPhone 3G photographs, but does not film; iPod touch and iPad, so far, have no camera; the iPhone 3GS films and photographs, but it has no cool effects; the iPhone 4 has two cameras that shoot, photograph and the only one that can use iMovie (officially), but still has no legal effects.
