From the first day of March, the Central Bank's determination to oblige card operators to use the quotation of the dollar on the day of purchase, rather than the day on which the invoice is due, came into force. People who usually use the credit card to make international purchases, both online and in physical stores, will be able to buy their products with the certainty that it will be that value in reais, converted from the dollar, at the time of purchase, will not be changed .

Mudana aims to make consumers have a better forecast

With this change, the Central Bank aims to give consumers a better forecast of how much they will pay before making a purchase with their credit card when buying from online stores in different countries.

Previously, the dollar quote used by the vast majority of credit cards was that of the day the invoice was closed. When the announcement about the change was made in November 2018, the Central Bank claimed that the customer was vulnerable to the dollar's variation from the date of the purchase until the payment period of the month's invoice.

With the new rule, there is no longer a need for possible readjustment of amounts on the next invoice. Now there will be on the invoice: the breakdown of each amount, the date, the identification of the foreign currency and the amount in that currency, the equivalent amount in dollars, the dollar to real conversion rate on the date of the expense and the amount in reais to get paid.

Now banks will be required to make the dollar to real conversion rate used on the previous day available on all customer service channels. In addition, a history of conversion rates will be charged.

It is important to note that in addition to the dollar quote for the conversion to real, there is also the charge on the Financial Operations Tax (IOF) on the card, which is 6.38% of the amount charged.
