It is not today that we comment on the success of AirPods and, more recently, the version Pro (launched last October); however, Apple’s vice president of product marketing, Greg Joswiak, revealed – in an interview for WIRED – that not even they expected this popularity of wireless headphones.
According to sources in the magazine, it is estimated that AirPods (all models) contributed with $ 7.3 billion to Apple’s revenue in 2019 – representing an increase of (amazingly) 121% per year, placing the company’s wearable division at the level of companies on the list Fortune 140.
All this success is more than Apple “could never have imagined”, according to Joz; he also compared the growth of AirPods to a “fire” – in reference to the speed with which it happened.
The executive also said that Apple has been imagining a completely wireless future for a long time, and that the creation of wireless headphones “was an obvious step for the iPhone”.
(We) imagined a wireless future many years ago … we created this amazing wireless product, the iPhone, however it felt strange when you saw someone wearing wired headphones. So we thought, “Why connect the wire?”
The design and fit of the AirPods are similar to those of the EarPods, which took years to build (and a lot of research) to provide a fit that would work for “as many people as possible,” according to the executive.
With AirPods Pro, he says Apple went even further by including three tips (silicone tips) replaceable, making the new headphones work for “an impressive percentage of the world population”.
We had worked with Stanford to digitize hundreds of different ear shapes and shapes in 3D to create a design that would work as a unique solution for a broad range of the population. With AirPods Pro, we took this research further – we studied more types of ear shapes and this allowed us to develop a design that, together with the three different tip sizes, works on an impressive percentage of the world population.
Facts aside, the leaker Jon Prosser recently inferred that Apple could embark on AirPods success again to launch a new wireless headset, this time over-ear (around the ear), which may be called “AirPods Studio”.
