It is not just today that we are talking about the stellar success of AirPods, but new research published by the analyst Horace Dediu regarding Apple’s wireless headset sales puts you on par with the Apple Watch – and above iPod!
Based on the popularity of AirPods Pro (which have an estimated delivery time of four weeks at the Apple Store Online), Dediu estimates that the headphones will have an incredible quarter of sales, agreeing with forecasts released by the Nikkei and for Bloomberg.
Since Apple does not disclose the number of gadgets sold, and AirPods are in the “Wearables, Home and Accessories“, He points out that it is not possible to enter this information. This, however, did not prevent him from inferring, earlier this year, that the Apple Watch’s revenue in the last quarter of 2018 had exceeded that of the iPod in 2007, when Apple’s MP3 player sales peaked.
Still, talking accurately about AirPod sales is like shooting in the dark. According to Dediu, there is no information about the expressiveness of Apple headphones on the market, and the only option is to “guess” how many Apple Watches were sold (as they are also in the same category as AirPods) and subtract them from the forecast “Wearable” revenue.
In addition, it is also necessary to assume how many household devices were sold in the period, as the category includes the “House and Accessories” part; that is, sales of all products in these individual niches must be accounted for in order to understand some of the sales of AirPods.
Having done this crazy math, Dediu said he expects an increase in 51% in the recipe of this general category, which could reach astronomical $ 10.9 billion. Of that amount, about $ 5.2 billion would come exclusively from sales of Apple Watches, while $ 5.7 billion would be collected with Apple TVs, HomePods, Beats headphones, iPods and, of course, AirPods.
Finally, Dediu assumed that the revenue from the sale of the aforementioned devices (except AirPods) should reach $ 1.7 billion; so, the $ 4 billion “Remaining” would compete with the sales performance of wireless headsets – thus, surpassing the historical maximum of iPods seen in 2007.
All of this to say that: AirPods were already a success; now, with the arrival of AirPods Pro, the company took its line of headphones to a new level, both functional and market. Nevertheless, we will see if Dediu’s forecasts will materialize at the end of this fiscal quarter, which has everything to be one of the best in Apple’s history.
