Against what critics call an «information bubble» – when the social media feed algorithm shows only content similar to what has been read by the user – Facebook is testing new ways to distribute posts. Called «Topics to Follow» (or Topics to Follow, in Portuguese) the new function of Mark Zuckerberg’s social network will show content from several vehicles separated by specific themes. » Topics to Follow » may start to appear in a new box in your news feed.

With the feature, the user will be able to slide his finger on the screen left or right to see all available themes such as theater, photography and films, for example. The function is being tested, initially, by a small number of users.

When viewing a specific topic, the user is directed to a page that shows how many and what are the sources that contribute to that topic. There will also be a button on this page that will allow you to follow all of these sources at once. Thus, whenever one of the vehicles publishes a new article on the topic followed, the content will appear in your news feed.

Beyond Fan Pages

Facebook confirmed that the social network is testing new ways to allow people to subscribe directly to News Feed topics. Thus, they will be able to see more articles (public page posts) that they may like. In addition to following specific support pages, this is a new way to follow general topics that interest each user.

“We are testing new ways for people to connect directly to topics in their News Feeds, so that they can see more stories on topics they are interested in. In addition to people being able to follow specific Facebook pages, they can now follow topics, ”said a spokesman. The feature is being tested in the United States on PC and mobile.

In this way, the chances of the user having access to content with divergent opinions is greater, opening the range of points of view and even making them question their sources considered reliable. At first, the themes proposed by Facebook are light. But, if the novelty is well received by users, the platform may include more sensitive topics such as politics.

In 2016 the social network tried something similar, allowing the user to organize their own feed by categories. The development of the feature on Facebook, however, did not proceed.
