After all, what to expect from the “iPhone 7”?

Much, much has been said about the iPhone 7 and its rumored features. Some, like the removal of the 3.5mm outlet, a look very similar to that of the iPhone 6s (only with a redesign of the antennas at the rear) and the double camera in the Plus model are practically certain; others, however, are still in that zone "it may happen, but I would not put my hand on the fire for that".

The analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, from KGI Securities, one of the few that still gets it right when it comes to forecasting new Apple products. That's because he has good contacts in Asia, where the partners who produce / assemble iGadgets and Macs have installations. A few days before Apple's special event, Kuo shared some information about the new device.

Processor

According to him, the iPhone 7 come with the A10 processor. So far, no surprise since Apple launches a new processor every year (the iPhone 6s has the A9 chip). Kuo, however, claims that this chip runs at 2.4GHz. TSMC would continue to be responsible for its production, using a new process called “InFO”.

Colors

Just as we already talked about, Kuo stated that iPhone 7 will come with five different color options. Again, nothing new. The difference is that, for the analyst, these five colors will be: silver, gold, rose gold, dark black (dark black) and glossy black (black piano). Did you miss any color? Well, no space gray according to the analyst.

Also according to Kuo, due to production problems, initially this glossy black can only be offered in the higher capacity versions of the iPhone 7.

Display

Screen sizes (4.7 ″; 5.5 ″) and resolutions (1334 × 750; 1920 × 1080 pixels) will remain exactly the same on the iPhone 7/7 Plus. However, the display gains similar characteristics to the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, being able to process a wider color range.

Cameras

Although we know that the camera of the 4.7 inch model will receive improvements, the dual camera of the iPhone 7 Plus is the big star. For Kuo, we are talking about two cameras with 12 megapixels each, a wide angle and a telephoto one. The great asset of this pair would be the possibility of giving an optical zoom. While the wide-angle camera would have larger pixels, a set of 6 lenses and optical stabilization, the telephoto would have smaller pixels and a set of 5 lenses.

The flash also gains improvements, going from a set of two LEDs (one hot and one cold) to four (two hot and two cold).

Capacity and RAM

For Kuo, Apple is not only abandoning the 16GB model but also the 64GB model. Thus, the line looks like this: 32GB, 128GB and 256GB as today on the 9.7 ″ iPad Pro.

The iPhone 7 continues with the current 2GB of RAM found in the iPhone 6s; however, the iPhone 7 Plus can gain 1GB more RAM (totaling 3GB of RAM) mainly to help the system hold the stride of the new iSight (dual camera).

Headphones

We have already said that the removal of the 3.5mm outlet is right. But does Apple distribute Bluetooth headphones in the box of iPhone 7 or EarPods with Lightning connector next to an adapter? For Kuo, Apple decided to go with the second option (wired headphones * and 3.5mm Lightning adapter).

Also according to the analyst, the internal space used by the 3.5mm outlet will be used to improve the 3D Touch recognition system. Externally, what we will see is a second row of loudspeakers, but everything is just a cosmetic thing. Inside there will be a new sensor to improve the user experience with 3D Touch. To compensate for the lack of a second speaker (which would make stereo sound possible, as in the iPad Pro), Apple added a new internal amplifier.

More water resistance

The iPhone 7 earns the same water resistance rating (IPX7) as the Apple Watch (up to 1 meter deep for up to 30 minutes), which is certainly very welcome considering all the tests done with the watch and the way it device performed on them.

Did you drop the iPhone in the vase? Did you throw yourself in the pool with the phone in your pocket? At least in these cases, the iPhone has everything to continue living without damage.

Sales forecast

This feature (water resistance) would have somewhat complicated the production of the device, hindering Apple to reach the desired number by the end of the year. Adding that to the cooling smartphone market as a whole, Kuo believes Apple will sell somewhere between 60-65 million iPhone 7 units in 2016, well below the 82 million iPhones 6s sold by the end of 2015.

· · ·

Kuo made no major disclosure. What surprised me most was the news that Apple was distributing wired headsets and an adapter after we saw supposed cases of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus ”saying just the opposite (that the device will come with Bluetooth headphones).

Despite having good sources, the analyst can also make mistakes. For these and others, be sure to follow the news that will be announced on Wednesday here at . 😉
