After closing 2004 in the third place in the national PC sales market, globally and in the notebooks, Acer managed to achieve leadership in the second quarter. In Portugal, the company recorded the highest sales volume of portable PCs, with a market share of 26.1 percent and a growth rate of 157.3 percent, Acer reported, citing figures from the Gartner Group.

In the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa), during the second quarter of 2005, the manufacturer took third place in the global PC market with an annual growth rate of 68.4 percent, which is three times the growth average of this market, 20.2 percent compared to the same period last year, says a report by Gartner.

In the segment of notebooks for this region, the company reinforced its leadership of first place, after having reached an annual growth rate of 70.5 percent. The market share was 19 percent in the second quarter of 2005.

Gianfranco Lanci, president of Acer, argues that the company’s challenge now lies in responding to an increasingly demanding market. «The IT market, in its constant evolution, points to the need to compete in scenarios where the PC is increasingly used as the focal point for a whole series of functions associated with Digital Life», he defends, in a statement.
