Last year alone, nearly 70 thousand telemedicine consultations were carried out in the Alentejo region. The consultations are carried out under the Telemedicine Program of the Regional Health Administration and, according to Lusa, involve the specialties of Cardiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Physiatrics, Pediatrics, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Diabetes, Traumatology and Orthopedics, Pediatric Surgery, Gastroenterology and Oncology.
Teleconsultations are carried out between the 16 Health Centers of Alentejo, the Regional Hospitals of Évora, Beja and Portalegre and Elvas and four Central Hospitals of Lisbon.
Tomorrow the presentation of the Renewed Project of the Telemedicine Program of Alentejo will take place in Évora, the deployment of the Alentejo Telepathology Network and the Quality Management Program, as well as the teleformation program for 2009, a project aimed at doctors, nurses and other health professionals.
The purpose of telemedicine is to place the benefits of ICT in the service of health, assisting in the diagnosis and treatment of patients who are isolated or are unable to travel to the service points for consultation.
