55.7 million Switches were sold. Console beats combined sales of Nintendo 64 and GameCube

Nintendo's latest financial results report reveals that the Japanese company sold 3.29 million Switch consoles in the first three months of 2020. In total, the number of units sold worldwide now stands at 55.7 million . The figure exceeds the combined sales of Nintendo 64 and GameCube, which total 54.6 million.

According to the report, Nintendo Switch sales during the first quarter of the year represent an increase of 33% over the same period last year. The company also reveals that between April 2019 and March 2020, 21.03 million units were sold.

The company's positive results, even in pandemic times, are largely related to the popularity of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The exclusive title for Switch hit the market on March 20 and, according to Nintendo, more than 11.77 million copies have been sold.

The latest chapter in the Animal Crossing series is now the 7th best selling game for Switch, surpassing titles like Luigis Mansion 3, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Super Mario Party or Splatoon 2.

For Nintendo, the next quarter, which runs from April 1 to June 30, may bring even more growth prospects. Recently, the Japanese company released an update to the popular title Super Mario Maker 2 that allows you to interconnect different levels and create complete adventures.

The console's trough also features releases of remastered versions of games from the Borderlands, Bioshock and XCOM series. Rumors are also circulating that Nintendo is preparing remakes of several classic games in the Super Mario saga.
