4th mobile operator dies at birth… again

Anacom approved the draft decision that provides for the revocation of the license that gave the National Telecommunications Network the right to proceed with a mobile telecommunications operation.

RNT represents a company consortium, which includes Radiomóvel, and was the only competitor in the procedure that made room for a fourth mobile operator.

According to Diário Económico, the revocation of the license was approved after RNT asked the regulator for a second postponement of the timings foreseen for the start of the project that led to the tender. The company intended to buy time to complete the bank guarantee of six million euros, provided for in the tender. The regulator accepted the first request for postponement but refused the second.

This was the second time that the communications regulator made room for a fourth mobile license. The first time was before the launch of UMTS and the intention was to bring more competition to the market in third generation services with the creation of a new operator. The delays in the launch of the third generation technology and the obstacles to operation in GSM ended up dictating the death at the birth of OniWay.
