Since the launch of 3G, 139 models of equipment compatible with the third generation WCDMA technology, technology based on UMTS, have been made available worldwide. According to the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), which advanced the data, this number triples the diversity of mobile phones with these characteristics, compared to the number found at the end of last June.

The association highlights the exponential growth in the number of WCDMA equipment and networks, advancing that at least 25 manufacturers have already launched equipment supported by the technology.

Likewise, the number of devices that combine WCDMA and EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) has also increased. With regard to networks, the organization notes the existence of 64 commercial WCDMA networks in 31 countries, which accumulate 20 million customers.

In 2004 alone, 13.6 million new subscribers were added to the WCDMA customer base, which translates into an annual growth of over 500 percent. At the end of 2004, there were already 16 million UMTS customers.
