Nearly 30 percent of foreigners visiting Portugal use the Internet to obtain information about the country. The data appear in a study recently promoted by Turismo de Portugal and show that the large chain is increasingly important as a vehicle for promoting tourist destinations.

Promoted during the summer next to the check in of the main Portuguese airports, the analysis states that only three percent of the inquired tourists were interested in visiting Portugal due to advertising stimulus, the most classic tool in the promotion strategies of destinations. The Internet was responsible for 29 percent of arrivals, writes the newspaper Público.

These conclusions lead Turismo de Portugal to admit that there are efforts to be made in the way Portugal is promoted, with the organization saying that it is «reinforcing its presence on online communication platforms», such as social networks.

It is also planned to provide a «direct link between the consumer and the offer» on the new external promotion portal, visitportugal.com.

Among other miscellaneous data, the study systematizes profile information, concluding that 55 percent of the 1,100 tourists interviewed were between 35 and 54 years old and only nine percent under 24.

More than half have an education equivalent to university education and none of the respondents had lower than secondary education. Only ten percent traveled alone, when the majority came with their spouse or other adults. There is a large share (75%) that is the entire stay in one place.
