Details about the new Apple TV: hobby, specs, remote control, games, USB-C and more!

Apple talked a lot about the new Apple TV in today's keynote and we?ve also covered the previous tvOS released to developers, but there are a few other things to highlight about the product.

Let's go?

In one more hobby

For the first time since the original Apple TV was launched, it seems that Ma is taking the product seriously and no longer considers it a hobby. He even won a dedicated item on the menu on her website:

Technical specifications

An Apple document for developers lists the specs:

  • 64-bit A8 processor
  • 32GB or 64GB storage
  • 2GB RAM
  • 10 / 100Mbps Ethernet
  • Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n / ac
  • Full HD 1080p resolution
  • HDMI

On the one hand, 2GB of cool RAM, on the other hand, no 4K resolution at all. The absence of Gigabit Ethernet is also curious, but I think very few people should use Apple TV connected by network cable.

Siri Remote and Apple TV Remote

In the same document above, Apple claims that the new Apple TV remote control will have two versions one with and the other without Siri (in this case, with screen search).

Initially, Siri Remote will be available in the following countries:

  • Germany
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Spain
  • United States
  • France
  • Japan
  • United Kingdom

The curious thing is that, visually, the control is identical perhaps because Apple should enable the use of Siri in more countries in the future, via software updates.

Limitations for developers

Also from the document in question, Apple claims that apps for the new Apple TV cannot weigh more than 200MB, anything more than that has to be downloaded on demand, as needed. Local data storage is also non-existent, everything is in iCloud.

Game controls

As rumors pointed out, Apple TV will be compatible with Bluetooth game controls. And the first one has already been announced by SteelSeries, Nimbus. Apple is already highlighting it on the part of its website that talks about games for Apple TV:

This model should cost US $ 50 in the USA and also be compatible with iGadgets and Macs.

Apple also sells the Remote Loop separately, to prevent your controller from flying away during hot gameplay:

The rear of the new Apple TV does not have exactly the same ports as the previous one:

Apple replaced the service / support Micro-USB port with a USB-C. In addition, it no longer has an optical audio output although it is Dolby Digital 7.1 (against Dolby Digital 5.1 from the previous one).

Dimensions and weight

The new Apple TV has the same 98mm of side as the previous generation, but 33mm in height instead of 23mm. It is much heavier, too: 425 against 272 grams.

The remote control measures 38x124x6.3mm ie it is almost the same thickness as the iPad Air 2 and weighs 47 grams.

Previous Apple TVs

TvOS runs only on the new Apple TV. There will be no update of the operating system for the third generation or earlier with all the news.
