Numbers indicate that OLED technology will be used throughout the next generation of televisions
A survey carried out by Om Day (global brand in the market analysis segment) revealed that, in February this year, the accumulated sales of TVs OLED exceeded the milestone of ten million units. This number of televisions sold occurs just seven years after the first models OLED reach the market, indicating that it is officially the next generation of TVs – and that the reign of screens LCD is coming to an end.
The data show that, since the beginning of production on a commercial scale, the sale of TVs with screen OLED has been growing every year. In 2013, when sales of these products started, only 35 thousand units were sold worldwide. But in 2017, this number was already 1.7 million units, increased to 2.9 million in 2018 and ended 2019 with 3.3 million units sold. These figures represent that about 11% of all TVs sold in the world in 2019 were of the type OLED, and the Om Day estimates that this technology represents about 25% of all devices sold by 2025.
And who else gains from it the LG. This is because the 19 brands that manufacture televisions OLED currently have a single supplier of screens for their devices: the LG Displays, which is the world's only panel manufacturer OLED of great dimension.
According Igor Krauniski, general manager of television products at LG Electronics in Brazil, the milestone reached by televisions OLED it serves to reinforce the pioneering spirit of the brand and the company's constant search for innovation.
The OLED differential
But, because technology OLED considered as the future of the television market, and something that should replace the LCD already in the coming years?
The main difference is in the way the pixels of each of these types of screens work: LCD they need feedback (that is, the existence of an external light source) so that the pixels on the screen can reproduce the colors of the images sent to it. This lighting is usually located on the back of the panel and is subject to several problems, as any crack can cause the light from this panel to end up escaping, thus generating color distortions in the projected image.
This type of problem does not happen on televisions OLED because this technology does not require the use of any light source for projecting images, with the screen's own pixels being able to generate its own lighting. So the screens OLED not only are they susceptible to color distortion problems, as they are much more natural and vibrant than those of technology LCD.
This is because, because they have their own light, it is possible to have total control of the illumination, lighting only the pixels that need to be illuminated on the screen. This allows TVs to OLED present the user with pure black – something that is impossible to achieve on LCD, because even the erased pixels receive the lighting from the feedback of these televisions. This is because the brightness control on the screens LCD It is made by zones, which makes it impossible to guarantee that a pixel that needs to remain off will not receive any light. This guarantee exists only on screens OLED, as they allow individual control of the brightness of each pixel.
Changing the future
But it's not just better image quality than screens OLED offer to users: due to the fact that they do not need an external light source, this technology provides the existence of some of the most interesting innovations that we have seen on the market in recent years, such as the existence of flexible and roll-up screens.
And it is some of those innovations allowed by technology that LG is bringing to Brazil in the year 2020. One of the characteristics that televisions OLED launched this year will tell what the company calls Gallery Series, a line of screens 65 and less than 20 mm thick, which already comes from the factory with a special wall bracket designed so that the devices can be installed very close to the wall, making the TV the same visual sensation for anyone observes her from a picture hanging in an art gallery.
Another technology that should arrive in Brazil also this year are televisions with resolution 8K. These devices will have a resolution 4x greater than the current TVs of 4K, allowing for even better image quality, and will be available on models OLED with 77 screen.
In addition, these devices will have an even greater integration of AI (artificial intelligence) solutions, as support for virtual assistants such as Google Assistant and the Alexa. This type of integration allows not only new ways of interacting with the TV itself (such as, for example, changing channels via voice command), but also allowing these televisions to communicate with other smart devices in the house, allowing them to be transformed into a true command center of the electronic equipment of the residence.
OLED in Brazil
despite the OLED It will clearly be the technology of the future, it is not yet among the most sought after TVs in Brazil. According to the most recent survey of the zoom (Internet search site for offers), there is no device with a screen OLED among the ten most sought after models by Brazilians in March, with searches practically dominated by technology models LED.
But this does not mean that there are no good models of televisions OLED available in Brazil. The very LG offers several models that use this technology here, each one for a different consumer profile.
