Western Digital surrenders to SSDs and launches first consumer models

Western Digital officially announced its entry into the solid state drive segment yesterday, with the WD SiliconEdge Blue and the WD SiliconDrive N1x.

The SiliconEdge Blue is a 2.5-inch SATA II drive, intended for both notebooks and desktops. It is very fast, offering up to 250MB / s read and 170MB / s write and with 64MB of cache. Only three models are available: 64GB (US $ 280), 128GB (US $ 530) and 256GB (US $ 1,000).

The SiliconDrive N1x is slower and promises to be more affordable, but initially it will only be available for WD partner manufacturers and selected distributors.
