Do you know what's really cool about USB 3.0? It is backwards compatible. That means you can buy one of the portable USB 3.0 HDDs from Iomega's eGo line now, and it will work perfectly with your Mac. It's just that the best thing about it: the change announced today won't bring any added price.
"As the market leader in hard disk solutions, Iomega is proud to be the first to switch to an entire line of USB 3.0 hard drives and without charging our customers extra," said Jonathan Huberman, president of Iomega. All of the company's products will go through this transition, including USB and FireWire drives, aimed at Macmanacos. Additionally, Huberman said that Apple's delay in adopting USB 3.0 ports on its machines is "interesting", and he thinks that Macs with such technology should already appear in early 2011.
In addition to the modern interface, the eGo drives feature 256-bit AES encryption via hardware and can withstand drops of up to two meters. 500GB drives currently have a suggested price of $ 115, while 1TB drives are priced at $ 190. USB 3.0 versions will be available from October in the United States.
This is the type of purchase you can make with the future in mind: copying your data to these hard drives will take a little while, but transferring everything to a new Mac (maybe next year) will be up to ten times faster. I wanted one of those.
