Global smartphone sales fall 14% in February, says survey

Global sales of smartphones 14% in February, due to the spread of the coronavirus in China and other countries, Counterpoint Research reported on Thursday, 26, in anticipation of a further drop in sales as the pandemic intensifies in other parts of the world.

The virus prompted Apple and other smartphone makers to close its stores in China in February, and government data suggest that Apple sold less than 500,000 smartphones on the Chinese market during the month.

Sales in the fourth quarter of last year totaled 406 million

China, which saw sales drop 38% in February from the previous year, is now showing signs of recovery, with many stores reopening in mid-March.

There are also signs of recovery in South Korea, but for other parts of the world the worst is yet to come, said Jean Park, senior analyst at Counterpoint.

Smartphone manufacturers are facing further disruptions in the supply chain as more countries impose downtime. On Tuesday, Foxconn, one of Apple's main suppliers, said it would suspend operations in India in accordance with government orders.
