Support for third-party applications that iMessage iOS 10 brought seems to be messing with developers in a very positive way. After it was revealed that the Messages App Store already has more than 1,650 apps, now the Sensor Tower analyzed how much this change affected previously existing apps, focusing on the number of downloads after the change.
In the image above, we can see the monstrous growth of the JibJab app, launched there in 2014. The animated GIF creation app managed to grow more than 1,500% after the week of September 12, when iOS received the update. This growth was greatly helped by Apple itself, which highlighted it on the App Store home screen.
GIF Keyboard, which also appeared on the App Store in 2014, grew 129% in downloads after gaining new features in the integration with Messages. Then, the song lyrics app, Genius, shows a 108% growth and the famous GIPHY reached 77%. The words game Words With Friends, which was one of the first games to integrate with iMessage, managed to grow 74% compared to the previous week. Currently, 4 of the 10 most downloaded free apps on the Messaging App Store are games.
While these numbers are an incentive for developers to join iMessage integration, it does not mean that it will automatically increase your downloads. This is because all the apps analyzed were already quite famous and had more than 50 thousand downloads before September.
As this integration is new, we do not know if this growth in downloads will continue to happen or if people will actually use the apps with the desired frequency. Even so, the news is great for developers, especially the JibJab guys and users.
