AMD announces Radeon HD 6990M, the world's fastest notebook GPU – for now

AMD Radeon HD 6990M GPU

AMD today announced the launch of the Radeon HD 6990M GPU, a new generation aimed at high performance notebooks, with 25% higher performance than NVIDIA GeForce 580M and compatible with DirectX 11, OpenGL 4, stereoscopic 3D, DirectCompute and OpenCL.

This is typically the type of GPU that Apple would use on the iMac (by the way, the current top-of-the-line model uses an HD 6970M), so it would make sense to see it in a possible minor upgrade for all-in-one desktops. Of course, as iMacs have practically just been updated, something like this should only happen at the end of the year or even in 2012, perhaps with another GPU, even more powerful.

In this branch of graphic hardware, you can't stay on top for a long time.
