A new agreement between WhatsApp and Google will make unlimited space for backing up the messenger for Android on Google Drive. As of November 12, the messaging application data file will no longer take up storage in the cloud, regardless of the size of the set of photos, videos and documents included.
The change was reported to some users and the TechTudo by email. In the message, Google warns that only backups made less than a year ago will count towards the infinite storage quota. Any WhatsApp file saved before this deadline is automatically removed from Drive, making it impossible to recover conversations. The measure, it is worth remembering, does not involve iPhone users (iOS), which remain backed up via iCloud.

WhatsApp backup works as a means of recovering conversations and shared files when installing the app on a new phone. To activate the backup, the user must access the settings of the app on Android and access the menu "Conversations> Conversation Backup". When activating the function, the app uses your Google account already registered on the smartphone to save data in the cloud as long as space is available in the Drive.
If the Drive is full, WhatsApp cannot have an active backup. In this case, a new installation of the application retrieves only the registration in the groups, completely eliminating the message history.
By making the space on the Drive unlimited, therefore, WhatsApp leaves aside the concern with the size of the backup. For other files, it is important to remember, the Google service offers a maximum of 15 GB of free storage with paid plans of up to 30 TB.

The migration to unlimited storage will be automatic for users who perform constant backups. The tip is to check the date of the last WhatsApp backup on Android. Go to the Settings menu> Conversations> Conversation Backup and check the date and time next to Google Drive. From there are two scenarios:
Check if the last backup was performed less than a year ago Photo: Reproduo / Paulo Alves
- If the last backup was made less than a year ago: there is no need to do anything to guarantee migration. However, users have the option of making new backups before November 12 to transfer the latest version possible to unlimited storage.
- If the backup was performed more than a year ago: Touch Backup to generate a new recovery file. From then on, new backups can be made up to one day before migration.
Although the official date for activating unlimited backup is November 12, Google warns that some users may get the news first.
