Apple has unquestionably been a leader in the tablet segment since it basically created it with the launch of the first iPad in 2010. There were rare times when some other manufacturer threatened to take Ma off the top, and that prediction never came true. Well, if the data from the latest IDC survey is of any use, the status quo keep for a longer time.
The firm focused on the global performance of the tablet market over the second quarter of 2018 and found that the segment, in general, continues to decline, which, moreover, continues over the past two years. In the last quarter, the fall was 13.5% compared to the same period last year, with 33 million of units shipped around the world.
In this not very encouraging scenario, only two companies bent the rule and showed growth in the market. Apple was one of them: with 11.5 million iPads dispatched in the second quarter, Cupertino saw a 0.9% growth year on year and its market share jumped from almost 30% to almost 35% thus remaining an isolated leader among manufacturers.
The other company that rose during the period was Huawei, which grew 7.7% year-on-year; even so, the 3.4 million tablet units shipped by the Chinese company were not enough to remove the vice-leader of the Samsung, which dispatched 5 million devices in the same period (a sharp drop of 16.1% compared to the second quarter of 2017).
Completing the ranking, Lenovo and mainly) Amazon saw performance in the segment also plummet; because of this, Microsoft, which shipped just over 1 million Surface devices in the last quarter, can enter the Top 5 in the near future.
IDC has placed Apple's leadership as part of a unified strategy to improve iOS for tablet users, continue to update its products and focus more and more on the thriving education segment.
Will the launch of the possible new borderless iPad Pro in the second half further leverage Cupertino's position in this battle? We'll have to wait and see.
