MacBook Air approved by EPEAT environmental classification

Not long ago, Apple found itself in the middle of yet another controversy. Shortly after abandoning the EPEAT environmental classification, the company recognized the mistake and went back.

At the time, we wrote:

For Apple, the rating is not keeping up with the rapid progress of its products, and so it thought it best to abandon it altogether. But due to the outcry, Ma came back and is talking to EPEAT to have the rating system reviewed.

MacBook Air and the environment

We do not know whether the system has undergone any changes, but this week EPEAT released the results of a verification process that tested five different ultrabooks in order to verify their compliance with the requirements of the evaluation system. Machines from Apple, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba were investigated, and all products in the case of Apple, MacBooks Air met the requirements of the evaluation criteria.

According to them, the specific areas of interest of the study include: see if the machine offers an upgrade option (which increases its useful life), the use of components that do not require exotic tools for an upgrade and materials that are easy to remove , such as batteries that can be removed from the computer's case.

Because it is quite complex, the MacBook Pro design with Retina display has not been evaluated by EPEAT, but the changes made in the last releases of the MacBooks Air (batteries no longer use glue to fix themselves, for example) seem to have pleased the group. In addition, other Apple computers (Macs Pro, Macs mini, iMacs and MacBooks Pro non-Retina) also have positive ratings.
