Right now, in 2008, the App Store was initially born with a shy 500 available applications, according to Wikipedia. Ten years later, the Apple app store now has more than 2 million titles and continues to grow in new and old markets.
To celebrate this decade, the application analysis and market intelligence company Annie App conducted a study about the trajectory of the App Store. The graphs, shown below, illustrate the results of the App Store over the years.
It is worth mentioning, however, that these numbers do not represent reality so well for a simple reason: the App Store was launched on July 10, 2008, but the App Annie hit the market in 2010. All the data compiled below goes from July 2010 to December 2017, excluding the first two years of the store's life, which means that the real numbers are even higher than indicated.
Currently, the number of devices installed with iOS is less than those with the Android operating system. Therefore, the number of downloads made on the App Store (around 30%) is also lower when compared to Google Play (70%). Still, the App Store records a much higher consumption of users compared to the Google store; in 2017, 66% of purchases made in app stores came from the App Store in 2012, it was 86%!
For the elaboration of another study data, some countries were selected in order to compare the monthly average of installed applications vs. used on iOS devices. Users in France came in first, with an average of 114 apps installed, while 39 are in fact used. In Brazil, users install around 108 applications and use 40 more frequently.
Since 2008, more than 4.5 million applications have been launched on the App Store, the vast majority of which are games. In general, the numbers related to games vary according to some data. They correspond to a greater number of applications launched in the store (77%), but currently represent 31% of downloads; even so, they are responsible for 75% of the expenses within the App Store, thanks to the large number of games with internal purchases.
Excluding games, the study also covered applications with monthly / annual subscription. The feature was implemented by Apple in 2011 and the initial revenue was almost $ 2 billion. In 2017, the collection with subscriptions reached US $ 10.6 billion and more and more applications are adopting this payment method.
Since June 2010, there have been more than 170 billion downloads, culminating in a revenue of over US $ 130 billion! The company also made a forecast regarding users' spending on the App Store in 2022, the year in which revenue is expected to reach $ 75.7 billion! By comparison, in 2017, US $ 42.5 billion was spent on apps.
These and other results obtained by the App Annie study are available for download on the firm's website.
