TCL's new P8M TV is a premium-looking entry model and really impressive 4K; check out our full review

The new entry-level smart TV that landed in Brazil to conquer the living room of Brazilians P8M 4K, gives TCL. On the 16th, we had the opportunity to hands-on the TV, but the TCL made the 50-inch model available for testing to see if it really should be the choice of the family that wants to enter the 4K world without spending a lot. Check out our full review of 4K P8M TV.

Construction and design

New entry-level TCL P8M 4K brings a very premium design with few edgesNew entry-level TCL P8M 4K brings a very premium design with few edges

The line P8M one step above the S6500 when it comes to construction. THE TCL abandon plastic and give way to a metallic finish both on the body and on the supports that accompany it, bringing a more premium and well-finished look. And this is reflected in the entire structure of the environment, since it gives a feeling of being using a more expensive model than it really is.

The assembly of the TV stands is not so easy and we recommend that two people do the process. Neither is it light, so carry the P8M alone may not be a good idea – in no doubt, ask for help from someone nearby.

The design is another point that draws attention: its edges are very thin, and on the bottom edge there is the logo of TCL stamped on a more circular aluminum bar. On more expensive models, this bar is an integrated sound system, but here only a bar.

Panel quality

In our hands-on, we were curious to test the true quality of the 4K It's from Upscaling gives P8M TV in content with lower resolutions. Going forward, 4K content really stands out here, now in lower quality content, Upscaling leaves much to be desired. Let's explain why.

Real 4K content really works, but Upscaling leaves something to be desiredReal 4K content really works, but Upscaling leaves something to be desired

Upscaling the technology used in TVs and other players to simulate the image at a higher resolution than originally. For example, imagine a movie available only in Full HD (1080p). If your TV were 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) and had Upscaling, the device would be able to reproduce all the pixels available in the image reproduction. In practice, a good Upscaling one who manages to "convert" these contents to be seen in excellent quality.

If your TV has Upscaling, it will automatically transform HD content to Full HD, and so onIf your TV has Upscaling, it will automatically transform HD content to Full HD, and so on

At 4K P8M TV, we noticed that this conversion does not do a good job and the images are even more blurred and with washed colors, when compared to a native Full HD TV. For comparison, a Full HD model from S6500own TCL, presents better results even with the Upscaling gives P8M activated. We looked for the device's settings and, until the time of publication of this review, we did not find an option that disables the function.

Despite that, 4K in 4K content really impressive, technologies HDR and Micro Dimming a gain in the vividness of the colors and the displayed brightness. The 120Hz response rate is another positive point, partially eliminating any eventual ?phantom? that appears on the screen.

Android TV and Google Assistant

Simple and intuitive Android TV systemSimple and intuitive Android TV system

Like all new TVs from TCL in Brazil, P8M 4K accompanies the Android TV, of Google, as an operating system. The system has a standard, well-organized and intuitive interface. Applications are housed in small rectangles and separated by categories who have used Chromecast go get acquainted quickly.

Applications in the Android TV also have more frequent updates and a wider range of availability compared to any smart TV with its own system, such as Samsung and LG. This includes games and entertainment applications such as Twitch that are not available on competitors' systems.

O Chromecast that comes embedded in P8M 4K very convenient when transmitting content quickly from your smartphone to the TV – for those familiar with the system will love the function. Due to the new four-core processor, the execution of some videos did not cause choking as the S6500 during our tests. The transition between applications and games was also not a problem.

Another great integrated smart TV feature P8M 4K O Google Assistant, which brings a whole convenience when it comes to consuming content. With just a press of a button, it is possible to speak directly into the microphone positioned on the remote control, such as a series name, music or video on the YouTube, to start automatically appearing on the screen. And speaking of control, there is nothing new in relation to the S6500It is very compact and easy to move.

Sound

THE P8M 4K it is equipped with two 8W power speakers. We liked the sound quality, with a good incidence of bass, especially due to the technology Dolby Audio. As in the cheaper models, the treble are very present and this can be a negative point when consuming movies. In addition, presets they are not very welcome, so we recommend using the equalizer to make your own sounds.

Completed

If you are looking for your first 4K TV and are considering P8M gives TCL, know that it is one of the best built entry models available in Brazil. 4K content around here is really impressive, even though Upscaling fails to convert simpler programs. The sound is also of high quality and shows a leap in relation to TCL S6500, in addition to the four-core processor running all Android TV apps without any choking.

The smart TV from TCL competes directly with RU7100, from Samsung, which also brings 4K resolution and cable-free visuals, which leaves a more cordless environment. Competition part, the model of TCL it shows a certain evolution in relation to the most basic lines and, in fact, it has positive points to take into consideration, even more for its cost-benefit factor.
