More than 500 days after announcing it, Apple throws in the towel in the development of AirPower
Last Friday (3/29) the Apple announced the definitive cancellation of the AirPower, the wireless charging base that the company unveiled in 2017. The reason alleged for Apple was that the AirPower never reached the level of quality that the manufacturer expects from the products it brings to the market.
To TechCrunch, the vice president of Hardware Engineering at Apple, Dan Riccio said the product did not meet Apple's quality standards and the company decided to cancel the project.
?After a lot of effort, we concluded that AirPower did not reach our high standards and canceled the project. We apologize to customers who were waiting for this launch. We continue to believe in a wireless future and are committed to expanding the wireless experience. ?
Dan Riccio, vice president of Hardware Engineering at Apple
What does AirPower?
O AirPower was an ambitious project that aimed to differentiate itself from other wireless charging bases on the market by allowing three different devices – one iPhone, one Apple Watch and a case with AirPods – were recharged simultaneously. In addition, the devices could be recharged anywhere on the surface of the AirPower and not just in a specific position.
The product was presented by Apple in September 2017 – more than 500 days ago – during the launch event of iPhone X and the iPhones 8 and 8 Plusfirst smartphones of the manufacturer to support the Qi protocol for wireless charging and should have gone on sale in 2018.
The admission that the engineering team failed to bring a product to the market – especially one announced at the biggest annual event at Apple, the launch of a iPhone, a rarity and undoubtedly a low point for the manufacturer. Not the first time that Apple faces problems and delays in the development of a product, the same happened with the HomePod and the AirPods, but these devices eventually made it to the shelves.
Problems and rumors
Although they have never been admitted publicly, the difficulties in engineering the AirPower they had been circulating in the media for a long time. The main challenge was to deal with the generation of heat by the electromagnetic coils, which, because they are so close to each other, caused the devices to overheat to the point of damaging them. Even with the cancellation, the Apple did not reveal whether that was in fact the reason for the decision.
THE Apple began to show signs that the project would not move forward after the launch event of the new iPhones in 2018, when less than AirPower were removed from the company's official website, with the exception of a single image on the page AirPods (but did not mention the name of the product).
Despite this, technology sites and publications like Wall Street Journal, continued to predict the arrival of the AirPower to the market at the beginning of that year.
The very Apple ended up fueling rumors that the charger could be launched soon: an updated image of a iPhone XS loading on a AirPower was found in the source code of the company's Australian website, references were discovered by developers on iOS and the box of the new AirPods with wireless charging case, which were released last week, clearly contains an image of the AirPower on the back – indicating that the Apple it intended to launch them simultaneously and that the delay of the wireless charger also affected the arrival of the new generation of AirPods to the market.
For owners of iPhones with loading capacity wireless (X / XS / XS Max / XR / 8/8 Plus) or the new AirPods that have this feature, the outlet will acquire one of the many charger options offered by other manufacturers, including competitors such as Samsung, which although not so audacious as for Apple, they very well fulfill the task of charging these devices wirelessly.
