10 years of iPad and the history of the equipment that Steve Jobs defined as “revolutionary”

It was 10 years ago that Apple introduced what it defined as a "revolutionary device for surfing the Internet" and that, since 2019, has already been entitled to its own operating system (OS). However, the truth is that the iPad is no longer a device that contributes in the same way to the revenues of the technological giant, at a time when the wearable market is growing strongly. Even so, since its launch, it has modeled three new "family members".

On January 27, 2010, the company presented the first iPad, 1.27 centimeters wide and weighing 680 grams, "thinner and lighter than any other laptop or netbook". The praise also arose from the then CEO of the technological giant, Steve Jobs, particularly in relation to its value, starting at 499 dollars. In terms of comparison, the 7th generation of the iPad presented in September 2019, includes a 10.2 inch screen and weighs 1 kg.

IPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price, guaranteed Steve Jobs, Apple CEO

At the time, user enthusiasm was evident, with the model hitting stores in April 2010. After The Wall Street Journal said that in the first week of orders, Apple sold thousands of iPads, the international press also guaranteed that the pre-sales stock of tablets sold out, leading to the advance of some deliveries.

A year later, and to help users draw and write on the iPad, Wacom launched a "special" pen, for 29.90 euros, thus eliminating the touch of fingers for more complex tasks. It was in 2015 that Apple released Apple Pencil.

In 2012 the successor to the first version of the iPad was confirmed by Apple, which guarantees that in three days it sold three million units. The success of the iPad was also reflected in the launch of the iPad mini, which nonetheless stopped being marketed in 2015. However, other updated versions of the model have emerged.

After 10 years, there are already several models that make up the Apple iPad range: iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air and iPad Pro. At the event where it presented its trumps of 2019, Apple also announced another novelty, beyond the 7th generation of the iPad: a new OS for some of the models called iPadOS.

With this Operating System, iPad users now have faster access to applications, which are also more, as well as a new level of multitasking. Work between several projects at the same time in an organized and divided way across the screen other of the offers available on iPadOS. Also noteworthy is an update on the keyboard that became available for the first time in full-size and new features of Apple Pencil, which now allows, for example, making printscreens.

As for sales, 2015 marked the most negative year for Apple, being the first time since 2011 that the apple company did not sell as few iPads, 9.9 million units. And, although it is no longer as popular as it was in the initial phase, the truth is that, according to data provided by Apple in the last two quarters, the model has registered growth in sales.

In 2012, for example, iPad revenues represented 26.2% of the company's total, while in 2019 they did not exceed 11%. It remains to wait for the release of the company's next report.

Evolution of the contribution of iPod sales to Apple

But the lesser popularity of the iPad may not be something very strange, considering that, according to IDC, the fall in the tablet market has been a trend for some years. Still, according to preliminary data, the consultant believes that in the third quarter of 2019 the distribution of tablets increased by 1.9% compared to the same period last year, reaching 37.6 million globally. It is precisely Apple that leads in the distribution, with 11.8 million iPads placed on the market in the third quarter of 2019.
