"Promo Uber Plus" is a widespread scam on social media that uses the name of the travel app to attract people with alleged R $ 300 discount coupons. However, to win the prize, they need to fill out a form, criminals steal users' personal and banking information. The scam was detected by experts from the dfndr lab, from the developer of security apps PSafe, who identified 85,000 attempts to access and share malicious links in the scheme since last Tuesday (4) in Brazil.

The false promotion is distributed in two ways on the Internet: through 155 sites that pass through authentic Uber pages and through 86 fake profiles on social networks set up with the objective of disseminating and sharing the links of the fraudulent pages. In contact with TechTudo, Uber advises users to always check that the links belong to the company's official website. See the full note at the end of this publication.

To more easily convince victims and give fraud credibility, the creators of the scam used the name of an authentic Uber promotion Uber Plus was a loyalty program created by the app in 2014 and available only in some cities in the United States. In 2015, Uber Plus came to be called UberSELECT, which is one of the travel modalities offered today in Brazil.
This is a behavior already known to our team. Whenever a real promotion is launched, cybercriminals take advantage and launch a fake promotion. They use this method to convince more victims, says dfndr lab director Emilio Simoni.

Like not falling for scams like
There are safe ways to get discounts on discount travel on the Uber app, including through social media. However, I need to be very careful to identify whether the promotion is real or a scam.
In order not to be the next victim, it is important to have a series of care before filling any form on the Internet. The experts at dfndr lab highlighted some useful points for identifying fake pages and navigating more safely. Check out:
- Stay tuned for links received through social networks and messengers, such as WhatsApp;
- Check the URL carefully before accessing the site (scammers usually use addresses very similar to those of companies);
- If in doubt, visit the company's official website to check if the promotion actually exists;
- Use a good antivirus.

"Uber preferably uses the company's official channels to get in touch with its users. When this is not possible, contacts by email or SMS always refer to addresses on the official uber.com website. In situations like the one reported by the report , we advise users to verify that the links belong to the official website and, most importantly, never share their registration data, such as passwords, since these data must be treated with the same care as bank data, for example. If you have questions about an incoming communication, any user can call support through the Help section of the app or through the uber.com/ajuda website. "
