Instagram announced on Monday (16) an expansion of its fact-checking program. From now on, publications that contain fake news will have their distribution filtered from the Explore tab and hashtag search, and will display a warning that that content is fake. The identification of these photos and videos will be done using machine learning technology, with the help of independent fact-checking companies.

The initiative has been in the testing phase in the United States since May this year, and can now be accessed globally on Android and iPhone (iOS) mobile applications, including in Brazil. When faced with a publication considered to be false, the user will see a warning screen, so that he decides whether to continue reading, trusting or sharing that content.

Instagram uses machine learning technology (machine learning) to find fake news on the social network and to apply the warning screen. The alert will be displayed to all users who find the post, either in the feed, in the profile, in the Stories or in Direct messages. In addition to the alert, an external link will provide articles and materials from trusted sources to refute the information contained in the fake post.
In addition to Instagram, the notice screen will also be automatically displayed in similar publications that are posted on Facebook, and vice versa. Since 2018, Facebook has been implementing measures to ban rumors from its platform, such as inserting a button for contextualizing the post, expelling pages that propagate fake news and offering a specific type of report for false news.
In addition to machine learning, Instagram says it uses a combination of factors to define that a publication should be sent to fact-checking companies. Comments and denouncements made by users that are categorized as false information will also be used to create a report that will help to identify potentially false information.
Instagram also wants to increase protection against bullying
A new bullying protection feature has also been added to Instagram today. When trying to publish a photo or video that contains a caption considered potentially offensive, the social network will give the user the opportunity to edit the text, signaling that there are inappropriate words in the publication.
The identification of these words in the legend will be done by means of artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to limit the spread of bullying and educate users about what Instagram's standards of conduct. The feature was launched today in some countries and will be available worldwide in the coming months.
